As Guy Brett said about Gego’s magnificent work, the process is primarily established by doing and undoing and in that sense the work crosses new cycles and new rhythms. Within the lines’ pace nothing new is sought, merely simplicity or unbalanced ways of seeing.
Those unbalances, those alternative modes of viewing, underlined the creative process of 4Pontos for the project Outros Olhares. On one hand, the intervention ought be collaborative, a symbiotic gathering made of sculpture and image, erecting a unified artistic expression. Free from conceptual borders, it should combine the appropriation of a space and three different views over Santo Tirso — an integration challenge. On the other hand, the previous structures built by the group all lived outside and it’s contamination was widespread and unchained; the Museu Abade Pedrosa suggested a virulent work, the alien organism would grow and live within that body, elongated, sealed and solemn.
In response, the work must occupy and be occupied; block and allow passage; disclosure and conceal. Its restless lines would lower the monumental internal dimension. The viewer would have its comfortable museum promenade taken away and find himself immersed in the piece, be part of it and give it sense. The space and its limits were acknowledged and the photographers’ views were foreseen. The sculpture flourished in paths and framed portraits; climbed walls stretching its boundaries beyond the solemnness of the chandeliers. It held images, scattered monads on the mesh that overlay themselves as one can grasp on the streets — the focus and unfocus rhythm of the one that elects what to see. In the sharpness of its angles new visions are pursued!
The reuse of PVC* tubes as a constructing medium appeared in 2011 with the work IPP PVC 10 63x0.25 ANOS, made for the exhibition Elipse da Duração, commemorating Instituto Politécnico do Porto’s anniversary, held at Palacete Pinto Leite. A few months later the group was selected to present a piece of public art for the 12th edition of Festival Imaginarius. Again, the collective explored the event’s location, highlighting its paths and the public immersion in art. The PVC built sculpture insisted on displaying simple elements strengthened by its union; spreading webs throughout surfaces, between spaces and individuals. What was then presented meant to poke boundaries, an exercise about the intrinsic and extrinsic tensions of an involving structure that featured a passageway. The mesh got hold of a river’s banks, establishing connections, searching dialogues.
These searches — tensions, dialogues and passages — are a kind of commitment, now presented in Outros Olhares.
The group 4Pontos was introduced in December 2008 with an installation built for Centro de Arte Contemporânea Graça Morais, Bragança, exploring concepts like mimesis, space, nature, context, environment and structure. In 2009 another work was presented at Festival Imaginarius maintaining the formal exploration of natural references and its relations to urban materials and environments.
